New publication shows intermediate AMD alters the anatomy of all retinal layers

Retinal insult in intermediate AMD is a lot more extensive than we once thought!

In this retrospective case-control study, we show altered anatomy of intermediate AMD eyes across all retinal layers, not just the outer retina. This included thinned ganglion cell/inner plexiform layer – important to consider clinically as this sign may be a post-synaptic manifestation of macular disease such as AMD, rather than pointing specifically towards optic nerve disease. Overall, this work could guide future clinical and research efforts towards specific retinal locations for diagnosis, monitoring, or even the development of potential treatments for AMD in its early stages.
